Treatment

Family Recovery is not a drug and alcohol treatment program. We look to our partners at Gulf Coast Recovery to provide outstanding services to assist the alcoholic/addict. We exist solely to support family members who have been deeply affected by the harmful behavior that results from living with someone who suffers from addiction.

Our program is conducted over a 10-day period at our own residential center. Our trained counseling staff works closely with each member of the family, with the goal of unlearning negative coping skills (codependency) and learning new, healthy ways of relating to each other. It can be difficult to untangle the threads of behavior patterns that have developed over years, but we know that families who take the time to address these issues experience a level of freedom and renewed bonding that wasn’t available to them under the “old rules.”

Just as some addicts “relapse” after periods of sobriety, families can go through episodes of reverting to old ways of responding to familiar circumstances. This is part of the healing process: understanding why this happens, and having the tools to handle things differently.

Both for the addict/alcoholic, and for the family, recovery isn’t just a moment in time when everything changes. It’s a process that has its ups and downs, and it requires work to keep it going. Throughout the 10 day program at Family Recovery, family members will have opportunities to practice their new skills, so they can be applied effectively at home, following treatment.

In the peaceful and relaxing environment of our recovery center, families often remark that this is the first real “break” they’ve had in years. They find time to relax and enjoy themselves—and each other. One of the most important elements of the Family Recovery program is meeting other families who have lived through similar situations. Family members of all ages can find allies among our clients, and these connections can become sources of ongoing strength, as well as lifelong friendships.
